Style essence is based on your facial features and the energy you project. Unlike body type systems, essence focuses on the visual impression you make—your unique combination of sharpness, softness, and presence.
Take the Style Personality QuizStyle essence (also known as Kitchener essence or the 7 essence system) is a styling framework that analyzes your facial features and natural energy to determine what clothing styles, fabrics, and details look most harmonious on you.
Originally developed by John Kitchener based on earlier work by Harriet McJimsey, the system identifies seven distinct essence types: Dramatic, Natural, Gamine, Classic, Romantic, Ingenue, and Ethereal.
Most people have 2-3 essences in their personal blend. Understanding your essence helps you choose clothing that feels authentically "you" and makes a cohesive visual impression.
Yang essences have sharp, bold, or unconstructed energy. They project strength, presence, and authority.
The balanced essence has equal yin and yang—harmonious, moderate, and timelessly elegant.
Yin essences have soft, delicate, or flowing energy. They project femininity, sweetness, or mystery.
"Bold, powerful, and unapologetically striking."
The Dramatic essence is the most yang of all essences, characterized by sharp angles, bold presence, and commanding energy. People with Dramatic essence have striking features that demand attention—high cheekbones, angular jawlines, and intense eyes. They look best in structured, architectural clothing that matches their powerful presence.
Celebrities: Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett
"Effortlessly cool, laid-back, and authentically approachable."
The Natural essence embodies casual yang energy—relaxed, approachable, and effortlessly stylish. People with Natural essence have broad, blunt features and an easygoing presence that looks best in unconstructed, comfortable clothing that moves with them rather than constraining them.
Celebrities: Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts
"Youthful, spirited, and charmingly unconventional."
The Gamine essence is yang with a twist—sharp and angular but playful, youthful, and full of spirit. People with Gamine essence have a mix of contrasts in their features, creating an interesting, eye-catching appearance. They look best in bold contrasts, cropped lengths, and unexpected combinations.
Celebrities: Audrey Hepburn, Emma Watson
"Timeless, elegant, and effortlessly refined."
The Classic essence is the only perfectly balanced essence—neither yin nor yang dominates. People with Classic essence have symmetrical, moderate features that create an impression of timeless beauty and refined elegance. They look best in balanced, harmonious outfits that avoid extremes.
Celebrities: Grace Kelly, Kate Middleton
"Lush, sensual, and magnetically feminine."
The Romantic essence is deep yin—soft, curved, and sensually feminine. People with Romantic essence have rounded features, full lips, large dreamy eyes, and an overall impression of lush femininity. They look best in draped, curve-honoring clothing that embraces their softness.
Celebrities: Marilyn Monroe, Scarlett Johansson
"Sweet, youthful, and delicately charming."
The Ingenue essence is delicate yin—sweet, youthful, and innocently charming. People with Ingenue essence have small, delicate features, large eyes, and an eternally youthful appearance. They look best in feminine, detailed clothing with small-scale elements and soft, sweet styling.
Celebrities: Amanda Seyfried, Elle Fanning
"Otherworldly, mystical, and hauntingly beautiful."
The Ethereal essence is the most yin of all essences—otherworldly, mystical, and seemingly from another time or realm. People with Ethereal essence have elongated, delicate features and an otherworldly quality that's hard to define but impossible to ignore. They look best in flowing, draped, almost mythical clothing.
Celebrities: Cate Blanchett (as Galadriel), Tilda Swinton
Style essence is primarily determined by facial features, not body shape. Ask yourself:
• Are your features sharp and angular, or soft and rounded?
• Do you have large, prominent features or small, delicate ones?
• Are your features symmetrical and balanced, or contrasting?
• What overall impression do your features give—powerful, soft, youthful?
Beyond features, think about the energy you project:
• How do people typically describe you on first impression?
• What clothing makes you feel most like yourself?
• Do you look better in structured or relaxed clothing?
• What styles feel like "costume" vs. authentically you?
Focuses on facial features and energy. Determines what styles, details, and "vibe" look most harmonious with your natural impression.
Focuses on body structure and bone structure. Determines silhouettes, lines, and shapes that flatter your physical frame.
Focuses on coloring (skin, hair, eyes). Determines which color palettes make you look healthy and vibrant.
These three systems work together. You might be a Soft Summer (color) with a Soft Natural (Kibbe) body type and Natural + Romantic essence blend.
